ESD Association Awards Announced at 2004 Symposium
At the 2004 EOS/ESD Symposium in September, in Grapevine, Texas, the ESD Association
honored Jack Smith with the Founder’s Award and Philip Kohlhaas with
the Industry Pioneer Award. The Association annually recognizes individuals
who have made a lasting impact on the Association or in the field of EOS/ESD
theory.
The Founder’s Award is given
to an individual who has made major contributions to the ESD Association and
the EOS/ESD Symposium. This year’s recipient is Jack Smith, who retired
from Lockheed Martin in 2000. Smith was a founder of the first EOS/ESD Symposium.
Smith holds a M.S. in physics from Syracuse University and a B.S. in physics
from Clarkson College of Technology. Smith’s work in the field of EOS/ESD
effects on electronics helped make the development of guidelines for protecting
electronics from EOS/ESD possible. Smith is also a founding member of the
Silicon Valley EOS/ESD Society and served as the Society’s first president.
This year’s Industry Pioneer
Award, given to an individual who has been a significant part of the ESD control
industry, is Philip V. Kohlhaas. Kohlhaas retired as a general manager from
3M Corporation in 1994. As sales and marketing manager and later sales and
marketing director, Kohlhaas was instrumental in the introduction of vital
ESD control products during the mid to late 1970s-the most significant period
for material and product development-and for bringing 3M Corporation to their
first EOS/ESD Symposium. Kohlhaas serves on the board of the Texas Memorial
Museum, the Austin Symphony Orchestra Board, and has served as the director
of the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens in Austin, Texas.
