Manders
Materials Engineer, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)

| February’s
volunteer spotlight is Michael Manders. A member of the ESD Association
since 1995, Manders has been a member of the wrist strap, work surface,
seating, and garment committees. He has authored an ESD Association
technical report, TR06-00, Static Electricity Hazards of Triboelectrically
Charged Garments, and has also participated in initial and round-robin
labs for numerous committees. Manders is currently a member of the Technical
and Administrative Support (TAS) Committee, where he is primarily responsible
for guiding working groups in the development of the initial lab and
round-robin testing processes and handles preparation and statistical
analysis of test results.

| Educational and professional background |
| Manders has a bachelor’s degree in electrical
engineering from the University of Toledo, in Ohio. He has been working
as a civilian in the Air Force for 18 years. He began his career as an
automatic test equipment engineer working on the Minuteman II/III ICBM
guidance system at Newark AFB, Ohio. Manders has spent the last 9 years
at Wright-Patterson AFB dedicated to the Air Force’s ESD control
program and electronic failure analysis. In this capacity, Manders was
involved in the investigation of the highly publicized TWA flight 800
accident. The state of the art Air Force Research Labs ESD facility allows
Mike to test, evaluate, and qualify ESD control materials and assess other
Air Force ESD concerns involving aircraft structures, fuel systems, munitions
handling, and refueling operations. |

Personal information, interests, and
hobbies |
 |
Manders
and his wife Staci have been married for 17 years and have two children.
He enjoys spending time with friends and family and gets the most enjoyment
out of watching his children participate in sports. His interests include
most sports and outdoor activities like hiking, boating and fishing. |
