During the September EOS/ESD Sympo- sium in Las Vegas, Nevada, the ESD Asso- ciation recognized, honored, and thanked three of these individuals by presenting them with the Association’s most presti- gious awards: Douglas C. Smith, Outstand- ing Contributions Award; Hank Domingos, Founders Award; and Burt Unger, Industry Pioneer Award. The efforts, activities, and contributions of these three individuals are summarized below in comments excerpted from the award presentations at the Symposium’s 25th Gala celebration. Douglas C. Smith—Outstanding Contributions Award Comments and presenta- tion by Tim Maloney Douglas C. Smith is now an independent consultant specializing in high frequency mea- surements, ESD (of course), and other elec- tronic design topics. He teaches laboratory- based courses covering these things. Let’s look at the story of how Doug came to be such a highly regarded con- sultant in this area. On his web site, Doug begins the account of ESDA recognizes special contributors to Association programs and mission his career not with college but with him at his amateur radio rig, K4OAP, as a young- ster. In his educational years, Doug was no stranger to the work-study concept. Doug worked as an electronics technician as early as high school, usually in the sum- mer. In college he continued with sum- mer jobs in electronics, and he also worked as a transmitter engineer and chief engineer at several different radio stations in his college town, Nashville, TN. Doug had a special ability to combine the theoretical with the practical to solve real problems, and knew it would serve him well in the future. Doug graduated with a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1969. Then he got a Master’s in EE from Cal Tech just a year later, in Continued on page 2 Douglas C.
