(ESDA) is renewing its focus on Electrical Overstress (EOS). EOS is an electrical operation of a device outside that de- vice’s absolute maximum rating, which leads to damage, malfunction or accel- erated aging. Over the last two year an EOS working group lead by Jean-Luc Lefebvre of Presto Engineering have developed a Technical Report (TR) on EOS which has made significant progress in defining the issue, defining the terms and categorizing the causes of EOS. This TR is in the final stages of review and should be available in the next few months. Defining and catego- rizing the problem does not solve the problem of EOS seen within the elec- tronics industry. ESDA has decided to continue its EOS effort by writing a Best Practices for Preventing EOS Damage in a Manufacturing Environment. The current EOS working group will form the core for the new effort, but it was quickly recognized that the team would need to expand to tackle the new project. A kickoff meeting for the new project was held during the recent standards meeting in LasVegas, lead byAdvanced Topics Business Unit Manager Robert Ashton of ON Semiconductor. Despite the Saturday morning at 7 AM time, 26 people attended the meeting and 13 expressed interest in helping to develop the new document. EOS tutorials and technical papers will also be presented at the 2013 Annual EOS/ESD Symposium being held in Las Vegas, NV, from September 8-13, 2013. Those interested in participat- ing in the EOS Best Practices Task Group should contact the EOS/ESD Association at info@esda.org.
