September/October 2024 Dear Friends of ESDA, When you read this letter, the annual EOS/ESD Symposium will almost be upon us. While most technical conferences have faced attendance challenges, it remains the anchor event for EOS/ESD Association, Inc. During the early days, the annual Symposium provided most of the needed financial support for the ESDA. Today, the revenue raised by the Symposium is dwarfed by several other business units, such as Standards and Certification. Furthermore, the net revenue from this event is expected to either remain steady or continue to slowly decline over the next few years. However, that does not diminish the event’s central position and critical importance for EOS/ESD Association, Inc. Building on this and positioning the Symposium to continue being the interconnecting anchor event that it has become, the strategy team has been reviewing the Symposium's vision and focus. The goal of this exercise was to deliberately connect this event to the "WHY", "HOW", and "WHAT" of EOS/ESD Association, Inc.’s vision and mission statement. The strategic focus statement that we drafted was that the Symposium “provides the foremost event that fosters the advancement of the stateof-the-art ESD knowledge.” Under this focus statement are additional points that flesh it out. The first thing that I will mention is that this event provides technical exchanges of peer-reviewed technical papers and presentations. While this is certainly not the only event to have ESD-related papers, it is clearly the one where the most significant number of such papers are presented. Over the years, many of the seminal papers related to this topic have been published in the Symposium Proceedings. The symposium team is committed to continuing their quest to advance the number of submissions, particularly the quality of submissions. With the goal of both increasing technical content and expanding focus areas at the Symposium, the team has included more high-profile keynote speakers from broader disciplines than in previous years. On Monday, Chandra Mouli, VP of Device Technology R&D at Micron Technologies, will be discussing the memory technology advancements that will drive the high performance needed for high-performance computing (HPC), generative AI (GenAI), and natural language processing (NPL). The various advanced packaging technologies, such as 3D structures, hybrid bonding, and hetero integration needed to enable these new memory demands will present challenging reliability problems for these futuristic technologies. Tuesday morning, Daniel Cooley, CTO and Sr. VP of Technology and Product Development at Silicon Labs, will speak to the audience on “Charting the Connected Future.” Mr. Cooley will focus on how cloud computing enables so much of the data storage that is needed for IoT, mobile devices, and various connectivity applications. On Wednesday, Frank Altmann, head of the Electronics Materials and Components BU at the Fraunhofer Institute, will discuss advanced failure analysis techniques for 3D packaged devices. He will discuss the significant reliability, cost, and process integration challenges of the new packaging solutions. While Systemin-Chip, 3D integration, wafer-level packaging, and Chip Embedded technologies are needed to drive further development of high-density microelectronic devices, understanding what failures are occurring and how these can limit the implementation of these technologies is critical. A central component of ESDA’s vision and mission has to do with networking and collaboration. Why EOS/ESD Association, Inc.? To be part of the network of experts building…an ecosystem in the theory and practice of EOS/ESD mitigation. How do we do that? We collaborate, building excellence. The EOS/ESD Symposium is one of the best venues for networking and collaboration with colleagues from across the industry. This occurs not only through interaction with the presenters in the technical sessions but also at workshops, in the hallways, at the various receptions, and, for some of us, at the bar at night. This is where friendships, relationships, collaborations, and networking are built. EOS/ESD Association , Inc., President Nathaniel Peachey From the President

The final component that I want to highlight is the tutorials that will be offered at this year’s Symposium. On the device/design side, there is an entire suite of new tutorials, developed by our industry colleagues. These classes focus on various aspects of characterization and design of on-chip ESD protection. There will also be tutorials on the ESD challenges of 2.5D and 3D modules and RF/high-speed I/O design. On the factory side, the 2-day ANSI/ESD S20.20 Seminar, which continues to be very popular, is being offered along with the ESD Basics and ESD Auditing/Measurements courses. In summary, this year’s Symposium is beginning to reflect the new vision and mission of the Association. While much of the program was compiled as the "WHY", "WHAT", and "HOW" of EOS/ESD Association, Inc’s vision was being defined, it still reflects this new vision. In the coming years, this vision and mission of the Association will continue to drive innovation and growth in the quality and experience of the EOS/ESD Symposium. Warm regards, Nate Nate Peachey President of EOS/ESD Association Inc.

A Message from our Senior Executive Director Connections-Collaborations-Networking-Knowledge I hope this message finds you all well. Our organization is currently navigating recovery from the recent EF2 tornado that struck our community. The aftermath has tested our resolve and underscored the strength of our collective spirit. In times like these, we witness firsthand the power of resilience and the significance of coming together as both a community and an organization supported by volunteers. Our community has demonstrated remarkable strength and compassion in the face of tragedy. The support shown among individuals as we work towards healing and rebuilding is incredible. They say Rome, known as the Copper City, embodies the resilience of its people. Recent events have reaffirmed this truth. Together, we are determined to overcome the challenges posed by this tornado and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more united than ever before. As a lifelong Rome resident, I have felt a pull to stay. It is easy to provide obvious reasons like this is where I grew up, where my family is, and where my job is. This tragedy reminds me that the spirit of Rome is much more than that, and this is the pull. In the same way this community rallies to rebuild and support one another, so must our organization draw strength from adversity. The ability to navigate challenges, adapt to unforeseen circumstances, and emerge stronger is a testament to our resilience. This resilience is not merely a characteristic of individuals but also a hallmark of successful organizations. Volunteers have played a pivotal role in our community’s recovery efforts, highlighting the impact of selflessness and community spirit. Within our organization, volunteers are equally crucial. They embody the values of teamwork, initiative, and compassion that are essential for driving our mission forward and ensuring the success of events like our Symposium, which serves as a cornerstone of our organization. As Nate discusses in his column, our Symposium event is a cornerstone of our organization. It is our “copper event”. The valuable lessons from this storm that devasted so many residents and businesses apply to our work within the organization, particularly in planning and conducting events. Preparedness and Flexibility: Just as we prepare for events with contingency plans, the tornado underscores the importance of preparedness and the need to remain flexible in the face of unexpected changes. Community and Support: The outpouring of support and unity in our community reminds us of the importance of fostering a supportive environment within our organization. When we stand together and support one another, we can achieve remarkable outcomes. Adaptability and Innovation: In the aftermath of the tornado, we've witnessed innovative solutions and adaptive strategies. Similarly, in our work, embracing innovation and adaptability allows us to respond effectively to changing circumstances and drive success. As our community continues its journey of recovery and rebuilding, we can carry forward the spirit of resilience and strength that defines us. These principles are integrated within our organization, leveraging our experiences to enhance our teamwork, creativity, and ability to overcome challenges. In times of adversity, we discover the true strength of individuals and organizations. The resilience demonstrated by our community in the aftermath of the tornado serves as a powerful reminder of our collective capacity to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. THRESHOLDTM September/October 2024 From July 16th to 18th, the inaugural IEW-Asia event was held at the luxurious Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Center in Singapore, co-located with the prestigious IEEE International Physical and Failure Analysis of Integrated Circuits (IPFA). The event provided an engaging and relaxed atmosphere for in-depth discussions on emerging challenges in the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Electrical Overstress (EOS) communities. This year's IEW-Asia featured a comprehensive lineup: • 1 keynote speech • 10 invited talks • 2 discussion groups • 2 technical presentation sessions with 10 engaging posters Key highlights included Dr. Sia Choon Beng’s keynote, which focused on improving wafer test techniques to tackle challenges in advanced semiconductor device reliability studies. Dr. Jack Zeng led the first discussion group on "Foundry ESD Solutions," which explored innovative solutions and design practices to optimize ESD protection at the foundry level. The core of the event was the poster sessions, where 10 excellent posters were presented, covering state-of-the-art ESD protection designs, chiplet interfaces, system-level applications, and diverse topics in ESD/EOS/Latchup (LU). A standout moment was the integration of IEW-Asia's second poster session with IPFA's, allowing participants from both events to exchange ideas and collaborate. Invited talks explored a range of technical topics, such as Tcad Simulation For Esd Protection by Professor Qiang Cui, Lu In High-Voltage Cmos And Bcd Technologies by Dr. Alwyn Rebello, and System-Level Esd Protection Design by Mr. Duncan Lee. These presentations highlighted advancements in testing methodologies, design optimizations, and the role of ESD control in automotive applications. Despite an unexpected travel incident that prevented Professor Pengpeng Ren from attending, Dr. Wei Gao seamlessly led the second discussion group on "What Kind of EDA Tools do ESD Designers Expect for the Future?" This session triggered insightful conversations on the future of EDA tools, touching on simulation improvements and more efficient verification processes. The event concluded with a series of invited talks addressing critical topics, such as Component And System-Level Esd Design Co-Optimizations by Mr. Hiroyasu Ishizuka, and a compelling presentation on Reliability Challenges For Automotive Chiplets by Dr. Dimitri Linten. The collaboration between IEW-Asia and IPFA was celebrated at the IPFA banquet, held at an old Shanghai-themed Chinese restaurant, featuring a Chinese Lion Dance and various performances. 2024 IEW-Asia Event Recap
